| Once in a blue moon | | Liz called this mornin' from the place she's pet-sitting to inform me that today is a novelty day. Not only is it the last day of a peculiar year..It is also a Blue Moon. For those who don't know, a Blue Moon is when the full moon falls twice in a single month. I don't know the statistics but its rare enough to make an adage about.
Liz did say that such occurs on new years once every 19 years..hmm..And being as its new year's eve and all, throw in a phenomenom full moon and downtown Atlanta, where I work, will be a wee(?) bit strange. Luckily when I'm heading home an interesting(odd) assortment of folks will be waiting for the peach to drop and forgetting that the economy sux, as well as other much talked about aspects of this past year, in childlike anticipation of something, albeit nonessential, quite enjoyable..And then there's the fireworks that welcome the new year with the dreams and hpoes of the crowd riding its shirttail..to the inevitable hangover of the new day..

On New Years eve we will experience the same thing which doesn't happen very often just as the expression is used for things not happening that often. It means the second full moon in the month. Blue moon simply meant rare or absurd. If you told a person in Shakespeare's day that something happens "once in a Blue Moon" they would attach no astronomical meaning to the statement.
The modern definition sprang up in the 1940s. In those days, the Farmer's Almanac of Maine offered a definition of Blue Moon so convoluted that even professional astronomers struggled to understand it. It involved factors such as the ecclesiastical dates of Easter and Lent, and the timing of seasons according to the dynamical mean sun. Aiming to explain blue moons to the layman, Sky & Telescope published an article in 1946 entitled "Once in a Blue Moon." The author James Hugh Pruett cited the 1937 Maine almanac and opined that the "second[full moon] in a month.

| Once In A Blue Moon? | | Early this morning, Fridfay Feb6th over Minneapollis Minnesota the moon gave off this blue and brownish orange glow around it. This was caused by cool air above with warmer air below the cold air reflecting off the ice crystals in the air I believe. Did you have this bluseish moon at all?
